To mark the start of Aspire Zone Foundation (AZF)’s National Sport Day celebrations, more than 50 of Qatar’s top public figures will join forces tomorrow afternoon to cycle their way to victory and generate enough power to illuminate The Torch Doha Hotel.
Aspire Zone has asked residents to join ministers, senior state officers and other public figures at 4pm to cheer on the athletes, who will each be peddling one of 50 stationary bikes.
Dr Mohamed Ghaith al-Kuwari, head of the National Sport Day Organisational Committee at AZF, said: “The Torch Hotel was designed to resemble a huge Olympic torch, reminding everyone that sport is the light and power of a healthy life.
“We wanted to begin our National Sport Day celebrations by lighting up The Torch Hotel using human power as this is the perfect celebration of human strength, will and determination.”
He continued, “The Torch Hotel is a famous beacon across Doha, so the very fact that Aspire will be lighting it using human power will hopefully encourage everyone to get active and inspire people to believe that, with a little effort, great things can be achieved, not only in sport but also in life.”
Khairiah al-Issa, member of the National Sport Day Organisational Committee, said: “The committee decided to kick-start the celebration by holding the most impressive event, lighting The Torch Hotel by human energy. The event is marked by the attendance of HE Dr Hamad bin Abdul Aziz al-Kuwari, Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, and HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, secretary-general of Qatar Olympic Committee, in addition to many Qatari VIPs who practise sports as a lifestyle as well as some athletes who will generate the power on cycles.”
AZF, through its member-organisations Aspire Academy, Aspetar and Aspire Logistics, has organised more than a dozen innovative sports events that thousands of residents and fans of all ages will be able to enjoy on Tuesday.
These include the Fun Race, organised by Aspire Logistics. Last year, the 4km race attracted more than 2,000 participants and, this year, Aspire is expecting even more to join the event.
Aspire has also invited families to walk 5,000 steps around Aspire’s facilities, an event based on the hugely successful Step into Health initiative.
